Obviously, here at Goal Crazy, we talk A LOT about goal setting and how much more effective you can be when you have a clear goal and plan to achieve it.
However, lots of times reaching goals isn't always super clear... lots of time it is full of taking risks and doing things you really don't know how to do. What do you do when situations are like this? Do you wait to till you have a clearer plan? Or do you get started anyways?
Today I had the awesome opportunity to speak with Christopher Lier; the co-founder of LeadGen. Christopher is an entrepreneur based in London, and he was kind enough to share with me his entrepreneurship journey and how his career has formed by him taking action, even when he didn't know exactly what he was doing.
6 Reasons To Get Started Even If You Don't Have It All Figured Out
1. You will find your passion by trying new things and taking risks
One of the best ways to show this is Christopher's journey to becoming an entrepreneur...
One of the entrepreneurial characteristics Christopher has is his determination to get started on a goal even if he doesn't know exactly what he is doing. He is a risk-taker!
Christopher grew up in Germany, but after spending most of his life there, he felt like he didn't have a purpose there and wanted a change. He wasn't sure yet what his purpose was, but he knew that he continued to live in Germany as he had been, nothing would change.
It's crazy how things work out... his decision to leave Germany is what sparked a chain of events that led him to co-found LeadGen...
Christopher decided to move from Germany to the UK to finish his studies. He didn't know anyone or having a clear plan as to what he would do, but went ahead and moved anyway.
He got an internship in the UK helping businesses optimize their SEO...which he realized was a passion for him. He had a natural talent for it and liked it so much that he decided to branch out on his own and started his own business; Leadcube Media.
2. Opportunities come as a result of taking action
Once you start taking action, more opportunities seem to find you way...
Through Christopher's business Leadcube he met his now current business partner, Waseem Bashir. At the time, Waseem also had a business of his own but had started a business on the side helping businesses create lead generation forms.
Christopher found this concept extremely interesting, and the two of them decided to partner together to co-found LeadGen; a software that makes it extremely easy for businesses to create lead generation form for their website. This business would provide a way for Christopher to follow two passions of his... to help small businesses generate leads (a passion Christopher found as a result of meeting Waseem) as well as give him an opportunity to do SEO work!
(Which let me remind you… he would have never found he liked SEO work if you didn’t leave Germany... and he would have never met his business partner if he didn’t decide to leave his job to start his own business! Again, it’s crazy how things work out when you take action!)
3. You will learn from your mistakes along the way
One of the things Christopher highly emphasized was the value of taking a risk. He says he is always willing to take a chance on himself... Because even if you make a mistake, you will learn from it.
One of the mistakes that Christopher made early with LeadGen is trying to run both LeadGen and his first business, Leadcube, simultaneously. He said at first, both his partner and himself were trying to each run their own businesses while at the same time starting LeadGen. Although he got good results, it was extremely difficult to manage all the challenges and projects from both businesses at the same time. Because of this, he wasn't fully able to take advantage of the opportunities LeadGen had to offer and felt as though he was leaving potential on the table. He explained how he has learned that you cannot fully focus things at once… you need to choose which you will focus on and go all...get obsessed!
Obviously, leaving the stability of the current businesses, Leadcube, to focus 100% on LeadGen was a risk… but, he claims he wishes he would have made this transition much sooner. Once Christopher decided to focus solely on LeadGen, he was able to become much more focused and get more done. He said that if he would have done this earlier, they could have made progress in a lot shorter amount of time.
However, Christopher says making mistakes is part of the journey to success... and it is something to be valued.
4. The journey is rewarding
One of the things Christopher has told me that has really stood out is that “starting a business is the ultimate personal-development challenge.” You are constantly being pushed out of your comfort zone, taking risks, and requiring yourself to learn more and more!
He explained that at first, this will be really challenging... but as you get started on your entrepreneurial journey, you will start to get used to the feeling of pushing your comfort zone. You will get comfortable trying new things and taking larger risks. And once that happens, you will fall in love with the journey entrepreneurship takes you on.
To help you see the joy of your journey, Christopher says you need to focus on your progress. One of the ways he has done this is with his ability to public speak...
He said that growing up he was a very bad public speaker and would get really nervous when talking in front of groups. But, as his business started to require this of him, he was forced to learn this skill! He said that now, it is actually one of his strengths! Now he has even started hosting his own events and workshops where he speaks in front of an audience regularly!
This is something that not only has helped his business to grow but also for him to grow as well!
5. There is always another level
You might feel like you don’t know how to get started because you aren’t sure how… but the truth is, you will always have this feeling! There is ALWAYS another level… whether you are just starting out or experienced, you will always have areas to grow that push your comfort and causes you to take another risk.
One of the amazing opportunities LeadGen has provided for Christopher is the chance to meet many successful business owners. He has had the opportunity to work with small businesses and large companies! And one of the consistent things he has realized is that no matter where you are in the phase of your journey, there will always be another level to work towards.
Once you get started on the track of progress, you will continue to find more ways and opportunities to progress further!
6. Investing your money in your dream will get you there faster
If you aren't willing to invest your money in your dream, you will never have it! I have met people who tell me they want to start a business, and then I invite them to come to a conference with me that will help them… but when they realize they must pay for it, they aren't willing to do it!
If your dream isn’t worth you pulling money out of your pocket, you will never have it!
If you are wanting to get started with a business or new venture in life, start investing your money into it. Once you pull money out of your pocket and invest it towards your goal, you will start to mentally become more committed toward achieving it.
Christopher has personally experienced this by investing in his businesses and personal development.
In conclusion... get started, and be consistent
Christopher said that “how you start is how you end up acting every day.”
If you want to grow, you need to start the habit of pushing yourself. Unless you develop this skill, achieving your goals will be difficult.
I mean, if you already had the skill to do it now, wouldn't you have done it already? To do something you have never done will require you to start doing things you have never done in the past.
Find a way to take the first step towards your goal TODAY... even if it is something small like making a phone call or researching for 15 minutes. Get started!
